Why We're Striving to Be a Gospel-Centered Church
There are two common approaches to life and faith that seem completely opposite but share a surprising problem: both place us at the center instead of Jesus. One says, “Follow the rules, be a good person, and earn God's approval.” The other says, “Follow your heart, live your truth, and decide for yourself what is right.” One emphasizes obedience. The other emphasizes freedom. But Jesus offers something different. The gospel is neither religious legalism nor cultural relativism. It is a better way—the Way of Jesus.
Two Extremes That Miss the Gospel
Religious legalism says, “I obey, therefore I am accepted.” It measures our worth by our performance. When we succeed, we become proud and judgmental. When we fail, we become discouraged and ashamed. Either way, our relationship with God becomes about what we've accomplished rather than what Jesus has done.
Cultural relativism says, “I decide what's right for me.” It emphasizes personal freedom and acceptance but often treats truth as a matter of individual preference. Yet love without truth cannot help us grow, and freedom without direction can leave us lost.
Jesus offers something radically different from both.
The Gospel: Grace That Transforms
The gospel says: “Through Jesus, I am accepted by grace—and His grace is transforming my life.” We don't have to earn God's love through religious performance. But neither does God's love leave us unchanged. Jesus welcomed sinners, loved outsiders, and extended extraordinary compassion to people whom religious society rejected. Yet He also called people to repentance and a new way of life.
Jesus loves us where we are, but He loves us too much to leave us there. Grace doesn't eliminate obedience. It changes the reason we obey. We don't pursue holiness to earn God's love. We pursue holiness because we've received His love.
What Kind of Church Do We Want to Be?
At Way of Christ Columbia, we're striving to become a church where grace and truth belong together.
That means:
Truth without arrogance. We take Scripture seriously while remaining humble about our own need for grace.
Grace without compromise. We welcome people as they are while encouraging everyone to grow toward Christlikeness.
Holiness without legalism. We pursue obedience out of love for Jesus, not to earn His approval.
Freedom without self-centeredness. We discover true freedom not by living for ourselves, but by following Jesus.
In Acts 11, something remarkable happened in Antioch. Jews and Gentiles, people historically separated by religious and cultural divisions, became a new community centered on Jesus. They were so identified with Him that people began calling them Christians (Acts 11:26). Their identity was no longer defined primarily by their differences, but by the One they followed. That's the kind of community we want to become.
Following Jesus Is a WAY of Life
We're not claiming to have everything figured out. We're imperfect people who need God's grace every day. But we believe Jesus offers something better than religious performance or simply following the culture around us. He invites us into a new way of life—one shaped by love, truth, grace, humility, and transformation.
At Way of Christ Columbia, our mission is simple:
Love God. Love People. Make Disciples.
Whether you're exploring faith, recovering from a difficult church experience, or looking for a community where you can grow as a follower of Jesus, we'd love for you to join us.
Because following Jesus isn't just something we do on Sundays. Following Jesus is a WAY of life.
